It was reported that Microsoft wanted to create a competitive, affordable, and powerful gaming console that can compete with Sony's upcoming PlayStation 2, so a team of engineers from their DirectX department got together to hatch plans for the gaming equipment they wanted to call the DirectXbox. Microsoft's gaming consoles are called Xbox, as a shortened term for DirectXbox, based on the names of the console's four developers: Otto Berkes, Kevin Bachus, Seamus Blackley, Ted Hase, all members of Microsoft's DirectX team.
